Though they will cost a little extra, they will be led by industry professionals and our class sizes will be small enough to ensure excellent instructor/pupil interaction.

A Troubleshooting Guide for Manuscripts
Saturday 11am-1pm

Take your writing to the next level! In this 2-hour workshop, multi-published authors Arlene F. Marks and J.A. McLachlan will show you how to identify the ten most common storytelling problems, and then teach you how to remedy each one, producing fiction that will grab the reader from the opening paragraph and not let go. Workshop members will participate in a guided review of their manuscript and take away a troubleshooting chart.

DIY Publicity: Who to Contact and What to Say
Saturday 3pm-5pm

Not sure which reviewers to approach about your book? Not sure what to say when you finally find them? This useful, hands-on Ad Astra workshop will let you leave the convention with a list of appropriate reviewers and websites, as well as a query letter template to use when asking for reviews and other promotional opportunities. Being your own publicist has never been so easy!

Important: Attendees must bring an internet-enabled device for searching and should be able to create a document for their list on the spot. If attendees wish to brush up on their search skills prior to the workshop, Google offers a free class on power searching here:

How to Market and Sell Short Fiction
Sunday 1pm-3pm

Based on the popular writer’s guide, Playing the Short Game: How to Market & Sell Short Fiction,this workshop will give you critical advice on how to sell your short stories to  professional markets and to build a career as a short fiction writer. Topics covered include:  rights and licensing for short fiction, a strategy for selecting your target markets, finding short  fiction markets, selecting the right market, submitting short fiction to a market, and what not to do when submitting.
